James Gilbey

Discovery Networks Europe

 

Since May 2005, James Gilbey has led the creative department of Discovery Networks Europe.
Born and raised in London, England he has spent the last 25 years on both sides of the camera, starting his career as  Journalist and feature writer for a number of national newspapers and magazines.
After graduating from Loughborough University he spent a year on the BBC’s Number 1 Drama, “Eastenders” playing the obsessed maniacal stalker, Jack Woodman.
When Cable and Satellite Network, Nickelodeon, launched in the UK in 1993 James spent the next four years directing and producing shows for the channel that included, “Nickalive”, “Kids Choice Awards”, “TeckNick” and “…And Now This”.
His interest working behind the camera was gaining more momentum. After winning a BAFTA on the BBC show, “Short Change”, he joined Walt Disney/Buena Vista Television and was asked to take a position in Asia Pacific running their creative and production departments. Based in Hong Kong and Singapore he spent five years there producing multi award winning programs, marketing campaigns and series. He left in 2003 as regional Vice President of programming and production.

He has freelanced as an ad director and worked for broadcasters as diverse as the UK’s Channel 4 to Network 7 Australia before taking up his post as Creative Director for Discovery Networks Europe.

In the three years since joining he has overseen production, marketing, branding and promotion that has won over 20 Promax awards, 2 D&AD’s, and a Design Week Award.

He continues to publish articles and his popular blog www.lalasisterhood.blogspot.com isn’t as popular as he likes to tell people it is.
